The Emissary quest walkthrough

The Emissary starts early in the Valley of Ashes but cannot be finished until much later. You find the Emperor’s Seal at the edge of a poison-filled side road, then need the Shield Transmutation to walk through the fog. At the end waits a mini-boss who calls in a firing squad.

Finding the Emperor’s Seal

After clearing the corruption on the bridge at The Other Side Lantern, take the side road on the left that is covered in green poison fog. A train carriage at the outer edge of the fog holds the Emperor’s Seal, which starts the quest. A small poison patch nearby also hides Standard Firearm Parts.

Getting through the poison

The fog is lethal until you unlock the Shield Transmutation. While it is active, status effects cannot harm you, so you can walk straight through. Guides disagree on exactly where the power is earned, but all place it late in the story, so mark the road and come back.

If you are still early in the campaign, carry on with An Unheard Farewell and The Scarecrow instead.

Beating the firing-squad mini-boss

The Emissary looks like an ordinary soldier, but he can summon a firing squad that shoots in unison, and a full volley is nearly always fatal. Method suggests taking headshots with the Musket from cover. When he charges, empty the Blunderbuss into him and finish the fight with melee and parries.

Completing the quest

After the fight, explore the area and investigate the fine cloth on a spike to complete the quest. Method lists the Perfect Copy Amber in a nearby chest as the reward; other guides mention a Sands of Time consumable, so check the chests around the area.
